Charity 2010: Maggie's
This year Buchanan Galleries is proud to support Maggie's, the innovative cancer support charity that provides free emotional and practical support to anyone who has, or who has had cancer. The charity also offers support for families, friends and carers.
Maggie's allows people to address all aspects of living with cancer in a relaxed and uplifting environment. Visitors can share their experiences with others in similar situations and, with professional help, inform themselves about the medical realities of their disease.
They're based in the red sandstone building which faces onto Dumbarton Road in the grounds of the Western Infirmary hospital. Since they opened their doors in October 2002 they've made a huge difference to many people who are affected by a cancer diagnosis in the West of Scotland. In 2009 alone the Gatehouse building saw over 12,000 visits.
Plans are in place for a second Maggie's Centre to be built in Glasgow, in the grounds of Gartnavel Hospital, which will hopefully open in the first half of 2011. This shows the great need for Maggie's cancer support programme in Glasgow and for the people in the West of Scotland.

Car parking fines
At the request of our disabled customers, we introduced fines for abled-bodied drivers who abuse the disabled parking spaces in our car park. Proceeds from the fines are donated to Glasgow Shopmobility, the not-for-profit organisation which operates the mobility assistance service in Glasgow city centre.
