Buchanan Galleries shopping centre is in the middle of Glasgow city centre, and the heart of a city which loves to shop. We’re home to around 90 of the best retail names, including stores which aren’t found anywhere else in Glasgow – or even Scotland.
Go on – what are you waiting for?!
In April this year, we submitted an outline planning application to Glasgow City Council detailing our ambitions for Buchanan Galleries. We want to double the size of the existing centre, to provide even more shops and deliver a range of bars and restaurants.
Exciting changes will begin this year with major works planned to start in 2008. We’ll post regular updates as and when they happen.
Our plans include:
What does this mean for me?
Our plans
More shopping space
We plan to double the retail space we currently have. This will include an extension to the existing shopping centre, and new shops facing onto Killermont Street, North Hanover Street and Cathedral Street.
More places to eat and drink
Our plans include a new high quality restaurant area, which will give you more choice during the day while shopping, as well as in the evening.
Improvements to the existing shopping centre
We plan to make improvements to the main entrances to the centre, to make them more user-friendly. We are also looking to make some internal changes, which will benefit shoppers and retailers. The main entrance from Buchanan Street will be redesigned to create a feature ‘gateway’ to the centre.
Improvements to surrounding areas
We have included plans to improve the areas surrounding Buchanan Galleries. New pavements, landscaping and street furniture such as lampposts and seating, will help create an exciting environment for people to enjoy.
New public transport interchange and car park
There is an opportunity to redevelop Buchanan Bus Station to give Glasgow a 21st century public transport hub. Improvements are planned for Buchanan Bus Station including: covering the station; a new concourse; new improved passenger facilities, such as lounges and waiting areas; shops and cafés. The plans also include building a new car park over the bus station. In addition, there will be better access between Buchanan Galleries and the train and subway facilities. The result will be a more integrated and user-friendly transport hub.
How and where are we doing this?
The construction work will be in phases to keep disruption to a minimum. The first phase of construction in the major works will take place at the bus station - we will build the new station and car park first, before transferring parking to the new car park. We will then demolish the existing car park, to make way for the new extension. We will also be making improvements to the existing centre and the surrounding areas. Both Buchanan Bus Station and Buchanan Galleries will stay open while the works are taking place.
