Occasions

There aren't many occasions these days when you can really dress up, and a wedding is the perfect excuse.

Ideally, nobody wants to spend a small fortune on an outfit you're only going to wear once or twice, so it's important to bear this in mind when you hit the shops.

Re-accessorising can bring an old outfit back to life.  A new bag, pair of shoes, a belt, jewellery or hairpiece can do wonders.  Make sure you take the outfit with you when you go shopping so you can match colours and styles - there's nothing worse than getting home to realise the fabulous shoes you've just bought don't work with the dress you're trying to revamp.

When buying a dress, think about how many opportunities you'll have to wear it.  And whether it's a trend that will go out of fashion quickly.  If you think you'll be bored of it in six months or only wear it a handful of times then consider buying separates - they're often incorporated into a wardrobe a lot easier.  You'll be able to wear a skirt or pair of trousers as part of a few different looks either for work or play once the wedding's over.

Gone are the days when you can't wear black or white to a wedding.  One of the Spring/Summer trends picked up by the high street is black and white.  It's a versatile look that always looks sophisticated.  If you're a slave to black, then try grey - just as easy to wear but softer - and accessorise with some colour.

There are a variety of bold floral prints around which are great for a high summer wedding.  The more petite you are, the colder the print can be.  Pick out one colour from the print to accessorise the outfit with which will give a finished, polished look.

For a pretty, feminine look go for the sheer trend in nude colours - chiffons and organzas give a light, soft feel and are definitely better suited to the younger generation.

For those who are conscious of upper arms the trend for short sleeved jackets is one for you.  Alternatively, look for cap sleeved tops and dresses - both break up the upper arm, drawing less attention to the area.

It goes without saying that you can't trust the weather.  Always have a cardigan, wrap or coat to hand (and an umbrella!) as you never know if you're going to be caught outside waiting for the photographs or the transport to take you to the reception!

Some shopping suggestions...

Bay Trading always has its eyes on the latest trends, and this season is no exception. From jungle fever to florals and tie-dye, each trend has been made wearable with a hint of fun.  This sequin bandeau dress follows the 50's skirt trend, defining the waist and stopping just above the knees to flatter most figures.  The turquoise hue gives a real sense of summer and would look great with a healthy tan.

If there's one accessory you must have this season, it's a clutch bag.  Seen at Emporio Armani, Chloe, Gucci, Prada and Burberry - to name just a few - they came in all shapes and sizes.  This one from Accessorize (The Concertina Satin Frame Clutch, if you need its name - £22) should see you right through to Christmas.  Its nod to the 1920s gives it a vintage feel, and it'll remain timeless.

Tie Rack's the place to go if you're looking for a versatile 'cover up' option.  The store has pashminas in every colour of the rainbow at affordable prices.  An ideal wrap when those summer evenings get a little chilly, they also double up as a scarf in the winter.  With summer holidays just a breath away, pashminas are ideal for aeroplane comfort - either tucked under your head as a pillow or used as a blanket to snuggle up in. £19.99-£49.99.

A more unique way of accessorising an outfit is wearing a corsage.  Traditionally something worn in America on prom night, they have infiltrated the fashion arena and become a symbol of style and sophistication.  Either worn as a broach or on your wrist, Simply Yours Flowers can make one to your individual specifications and colours ensuring you'll be the belle of the ball. Prices from £8-£15.

The Pretty in Pink collection at Jacques Vert ticks all the right boxes.  Soft tailoring to suit all shapes and sizes, the collection offers a variety of looks for all occasions. Whether it's a wedding, garden party, birthday celebration or christening, all the separates work as individual pieces, ensuring you'll get a lot of wear out of them.  Hat £89, jacket £139, blouse £69 and skirt £79, in sizes 10-22.
