Start with the base

Bright make up hues are big this summer. And although they can look scary to apply, they can be easy to wear when you know what you're doing.  We've asked beauty guru Mailin Haddow to give us a step-by-step guide to how to wear colour - a perfect look for summer holidays and festivals.

Keep your base fresh and light.

Because we're going to apply bold colour on the eyes, the rest of your make up should be understated.  So instead of foundation, use a tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone without looking 'made up'.  If you've any blemishes, use concealer only where you need it in order to keep the rest of your skin really fresh.

Apply eye shadow

For a strong bold look, apply your chosen eye colour as a block of colour over your lids.

Pick one bright colour and, using a firm-headed eyeshadow brush, press the colour all over your eyelids.  Blend into the inner corner and up to the socket line, but don't go above it. Build up the colour gradually for a more intense, vibrant look.

Apply eye liner

Add eyeliner in a similar colour to really intensify the eyes.

Start with your top lids and apply along the top lash-line, rubbing the liner close to the roots of each lash to frame the eyes with a shimmer of colour.

Apply eye liner on lower lashes

Adding liner beneath your lower lashes gives a more polished and intense look.

You can skip the lower liner depending on the intensity you're after.  But for the full look, gently rub the pencil along the roots of the bottom lashes.  The colour will grip to the lashes, which will give a soft effect, rather than a harsh line.

Apply waterproof mascara

Add waterproof mascara to finish the eyes.

Apply to the top lashes only or if desired, apply to top and bottom lashes for a more dramatic finish.  Looking down, gently vibrate the wand as you take it from root to tip of lashes, which will coat the edges of each lash as well for added volume.

Apply blusher

Add a hint of subtle colour to your cheeks to emphasize your cheekbones and balance your face - but keep it soft.

To find the apple of your cheeks, smile - the most prominent, central part of your cheek is the apple.  Apply your colour here with a small headed, soft blusher brush, blending outwards.

Apply lip liner

Line your lips with a natural nude or pink shade.

Gently follow your natural lip line, keeping the line soft.  If it's looking too harsh, just blend the line gently into your lips with your finger.

Apply lip gloss

A sheer but bright lip colour - a sheer lipstick or gloss - finishes the look off perfect
