In the know

HANGING on a rail in my attic, washed and ironed, and packaged neatly in clothes carriers are all my Christmas party outfits from the last decade and more.

When I was up in the attic recently, searching for a long-lost handbag, I took a trip down Christmas party memory lane – how skinny was I when i wore that custom-made lycra dress with a cut-out at the belly? And what possessed me to buy and more worryingly, wear, that fake fur dalmation print micro mini shift dress and matching jacket!? And how could I ever forget the night I wore those denim boot cut jeans with diamante sparkles, and matching bustier? An outfit I loved so much I wore it on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Hogmanay that year.

There is possibly nothing more exciting in a girl’s shopping calendar than the trip to buy a Christmas party outfit. It’s the only time of the year that most of us can go completely over the top – layer on the sequins and sparkle, raise the hem, lower the neckline, do whatever it is we think will make us the most glamorous girl at the ball.

As a Fashion Editor, stylist and general girl about town, my Christmas party outfit seemed to happen every week for a while. With so many events and parties to attend, stepping into your gladrags two, three, even four times a week, the shine kind of fades.

And when I started working for myself, with no Christmas party to go to, the sparkle definitely disappeared.
But when I was styling our Christmas party shoot for this website I suddenly got very excited again about the prospect of a Christmas night out.

So, I have decided to wear jeans to every event until said night out, which i have organised for myself and a group of fellow self-employed friends. Then we will all be going for full-on Christmas glamour and razzamatazz. I already have my eye on a perfect party frock in River Island, and my love of vintage clothing has seen me scour ebay and the Glasgow vintage stores frantically trying to find that extra special, showstopper of a dress, and all the perfect accessories, that will make me feel that I am truly on the best night out of the year, no matter how rough I look and feel at the end of it!

My last Christmas night out was in 2003, and the pink 50s style skirt and pink panther t-shirt combo I wore that year are ready and waiting for a new addition to take their place at the end of the rail. Whatever outfit you choose for your Christmas night out, make sure it’s bold and beautiful and over the top! Merry Christmas!
