In the know

EVERY season fashion throws up new trends, and this Spring/Summer has given us a couple of the most wearable yet - although we may not think so at the moment.

Once we've realised that - following on from last season's short-lived 40s trend - waists are back to stay, we will embrace the gorgeous nod to the 50s Prom Queen by wearing full skirts, and tight tops. And we may also discover we actually do love those 1970s-style high waisted jeans.

On the catwalk for this season, Gucci's full skirts and D&G's floral print prom dresses were a nod to an age when waists were small, busts were prominent, but covered up in tight sweaters, and cardigans were loosely thrown over shoulders, with curls in hair, and ballet pumps completing a gorgeous look. Think Grease - more Sandy than Rizzo - and you're there.

The 50s epitomised all that was right with fashion, when, after an austere post-war period, people learned to love clothes again. Fabrics were cheaper, colours were brighter, and it really was a brave new world, as the teenager was born, and young adults were determined to use fashion and music as ways of defining and separating themselves from their parents' generation. It's a trend that evokes the good times and every so often rears its beautiful head on the catwalk again. It's about time too - we've all spent far too long in smocks recently. However, with the demise of one 70s trend, we see the rise, quite literally of another - high waisted jeans.

No matter how much we may like our low slung low-rise, let's face it - the high waist is most definitely back. Embrace it, and remember that it creates longer legs, a more rounded behind, a more womanly waist and it's much warmer, with no midriff baring. What's not to like about such a wearable trend? The best way to wear high-waisted jeans is with a boot cut or a flare, with a little vest top or blouse tucked in. Many dislike the shape because a waistband above the stomach means the fabric round the tummy may make it look, well, more round. But a slight bulge in the tum, which is perfectly normal in a woman, or a muffin top? You decide.
